Addicted to Fitness Show Notes – From the Vault: Protein Preferences

I imagine I’ll be humming along to this Zac Brown tune while you all listening to this week’s podcast. Shannon and I are off to Mexico for a friend’s wedding, but we don’t want to leave you loyal listeners without your weekly dose of health and fitness information. Which is why we reached into the ETT Wrap show vault for a throwback episode of the Addicted to Fitness podcast.

Shannon and I start off this classic episode discussing our weekly workouts, group training and ETT’s first team competition, the Mud Endeavor 5k. For those unfamiliar with the Mud Endeavor, its a great obstacle course race based out of West Central Florida. Having already ran this race, I highly recommend it and suggest anyone looking to challenge themselves, consider obstacle course racing. After all the mudrun talk, we get into the real “meat” of the episode.

The remainder of the podcast focuses on the wide variety of protein sources available to meateaters and non-meateaters. Shannon describes her experience as a vegan and lists off her go-to protein sources (legumes, nuts, seeds) along with what type of supplements she had to take in order to get all her essential nutrients (B12 & iron to name a few). We also read off a ton of our listeners favorite protein sources which include peanut butter, yogurt, eggs, cricket flour, red meat and many more. Reeling off our protein preferences leads to an interesting discussion about the importance of gut health, which we will definitely be talking more about in a future episode.

Addicted to Fitness Show Notes – Our Whole Body Cryotherapy Experience

Hope you are ready to chill with us on this episode as we get into a review and interview on cryotherapy.

Nick speaks with Jeff Houghtaling, who is the manager of the Tampa location of US Cryotherapy Tampa, a franchise based out of California. They discuss the difference between US Cryo’s whole body cryotherapy (WBC) and the partial body cryotherapy aka cryo-saunas (i.e. different cooling component, more thermoreceptors stimulate, breathing in cold air, etc. – more info).

They also chat about the WBC chamber, which a group of ETT clients bravely jump into later in the episode.

The benefits of cryotherapy are varied and attract a number of different types of clientele – from athletes to people looking to reduce wrinkles.

Because the therapy uses pretty extreme cold temperatures, there is quite a good deal of safety equipment and procedures include covered hands, feet, ears, nose and mouth, along with limited exposure times (3 minutes is the max for the full WBC chamber).

Nick shares his initial reaction on how much more intense the full chamber was than a cryo-sauna.

There’s more to the cryotherapy facilities than just the chamber, there’s a warm-up area and Jeff describes all the various equipment they have. While it’s not mandatory, there are some benefits that Jeff goes through why the equipment should be used.

The ETT team ventured into the unknown with a group therapy session and we interview everyone for their reactions after emerging from the frosty chamber, including frozen eyelashes (probably good to not wear mascara in the chamber).

Overall the whole crew’s experience was really positive and almost everyone walked out wanting to try it again in the future. Armed with a new appreciation for the cold, US Cryotherapy taught us all about our limitations and that we can all use a good chill from time to time.

There is a food craze going on that may seem new, but is in fact as old as time. This particular food item can be found in high end restaurants AND in the middle of the Serengeti. Celebrity chef, TV host and all-around badass Anthony Bourdin calls it “God’s Butter.” Shannon likes to call it “meat jelly.” I just call it DELICIOUS! If you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m talking about bone marrow. This often overlooked culinary delight can be found inside the bones of ruminants (cow, deer, etc.) and for the longest time was discarded by most Americans in the late 20th century & early 21st century. It seems like we’ve finally discovered the richness, in both nutrition and taste, of this somewhat forgotten food item. One ounce of beef bone marrow contains nearly 15g of fat (mostly monounsaturated), 2g of protein and 140 calories. It also contains important sources of fat soluble vitamins and minerals like calcium and iron (source). The exact amounts of these nutrients is hard to find but it’s believed that consuming bone marrow can improve gut health and even help treat individuals with cancer (source). I’m not quite prepared to call bone marrow the next miracle treatment for cancer, but I am willing to order it every time I see it on the menu.

One of the big components of eating healthy is cooking the majority of your meals at home with whole ingredients. As a working professional I know that meal planning & grocery shopping for an entire week of meals can be time consuming. What’s on the Menu

Taking a little different approach to this week’s look at what’s on my menu. Instead of highlighting a healthy food item, I’m going to tell you about a healthy endeavor that Elemental Training Tampa (ETT) will be offering this week. On Saturday, November 19th, ETT will be bringing our free monthly group workouts to the Seminole Heights neighborhood. Shannon and I are residents of Seminole Heights and we thought what better way to give back to the community we love so much than helping people improve their fitness.  The workout will incorporate basic punching & kicking techniques with complimentary strength building exercises to help you start your weekend off right. No experience is required and exercise modifications will be provided for all fitness levels. As if the workout wasn’t enticing enough, each participant will receive a 15% discount at one of Seminole Heights best coffee “shops” Spaddy’s Coffee Co. We will also be collecting non-perishable food items for ETT’s annual food drive for Metropolitan Ministries. Thanksgiving Edition of The Macros Game

Shannon and I kick of this week’s episode of the Addicted to Fitness podcast teasing a pair of upcoming Elemental Training Tampa (ETT) events. We make a bold prediction about ETT member Carmin’s fight at Mike Calta’s Punch Out 2, which will have already taken place by the time this episode debuts. Make sure you check out our Instagram or 102.5 The Bone’s website to see if our prediction was correct.  We also mentioned our upcoming group workout taking place November 19th in the Tampa neighborhood of Seminole Heights. For the last decade or more, Shannon has wanted to acquire her yoga teacher certification. She has practiced numerous types of yoga over the years and has even help tudor beginners through basic poses. After years of searching for the right program, she finally took the plunge and invested in the Bella Prana Yoga teacher program. Shannon outlines their curriculum and describes why Bella Prana’s approach to yoga inspired her to enroll. She promises to give us periodic updates about her training over the next several months. I think it’s safe to say that ETT Yoga will be coming soon. One thing you won’t have to wait for is the newest edition of The Macros Game!

We are closing in on Thanksgiving Day, which in my opinion is the most epic food holiday of the year. That’s why this edition of the Macros Game will feature common Thanksgiving Day food items. Shannon and I go head to head in this nutritional trivia game to determine who know more about the macronutrient (protein, fat, carbs) content of turkey, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie and several other items you’re likely to see on Turkey Day. Food Label Breakdown

Shannon and I start off this week’s episode reminiscing about our past week of training. Our workout recap got me thinking about a possible exercise experiment. We’ve talked about which exercises burn the most calories according to a Harvard medical school publication in a past episode, but I want to determine which of the following exercises burn the most calories in 10 minutes: jump rope, shadowbox or stationary bike. Not sure if I’d be able to podcast this experiment, but I’d certainly post the results in a future blog. Which of those exercise do you think would burn the most calories in 10 minutes?

After our training recap, Shannon and I investigate the actual definitions for several commonly used food label terms. Thanks to an article written by Sheah Rarback, a registered dietician and nutritionist at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, we discover what the terms natural, GMO, non-GMO, gluten-free and organic really mean. Make sure you listen to this episode because I think you’ll be surprised about what products are allowed to use these terms. I know I was. In addition to these terms, we also discuss the ever evolving concept of “grass-fed.” Shannon and I frequently purchase grass-fed products, but after reading an article about the USDA recently dropping their requirements for a product to be considered grass-fed, we’re definitely rethinking adding them to our weekly grocery list.

What’s on the Menu

This week’s #whatiatewednesday post is meant to help those who’d like to add a little flavor to their food without adding empty calories. It’s true, sauces can sometimes be a stumbling block to healthy eating. Whether it’s preservatives or added sugar, something as simple as store bought tomato sauce can be detrimental to your quest to eat better. That’s why I wanted to highlight a sauce that in my opinion, and according to the label, seems legit. Publix Greenwise’s roasted garlic tomato sauce contains only 4g of sugar per 1/2 cup and has an ingredient list that I could recreate at home if I were so inclined. If you do use it, I’d suggest sticking to the serving size or less and use it to add a little flavor to veggies, not pasta.
