Addicted to Fitness Show Notes – From the Vault: Active Key West Trip & Cricket Protein Bar Review

A year ago this week, Shannon and I were hosting numerous events in preparation for our wedding on April 29th. To commemorate that event, I figured I’d reach back into the ETT Wrap Show vault for our first podcast as husband and wife. Even though we start this throwback episode off discussing our wedding day, we quickly turn the conversation to health and fitness with a recap of our extremely active honeymoon in Key West.

Bikes were are preferred mode of transportation while in Key West

All you avid Addicted to Fitness listeners know that Shannon and I aren’t ones to just lie around on vacation, and our honeymoon was no exception. We decided to rent bikes instead of a car while in Key West. This choice allowed us to stay active and explore lesser seen parts of the city. I also got a nice long run in from our hotel to the Southernmost Point, which was necessary because I was about to participate in the Mud Endeavor obstacle course race with several other ETT members. You can click here to check out another throwback episode about our performance at the Mud Endeavor.

After discussing our upcoming mudrun and the possibility of me completing an Ironman triathlon, the episode quickly transitions to Shannon taste testing a very unique protein bar. Fans of the podcast have probably heard my former cohost, Tyler, and I taste test Exo Cricket Flour Protein bars (episode link), but I was still waiting to get Shannon’s first impression. I hate to spoil it for you guys but Shannon wasn’t grossed out by the bars made with ground up crickets. It didn’t come as much of a surprise to me being that the first 4 ingredients were almonds, dates, coconut and honey. Click here to learn more about this sustainable protein bar.

Addicted to Fitness Show Notes – From the Vault: Protein Preferences

I got my toes in the water, ass in the sand. Not a worry in the world, cold beer in my hand. Life is good today. Life is good today

I imagine I’ll be humming along to this Zac Brown tune while you all listening to this week’s podcast. Shannon and I are off to Mexico for a friend’s wedding, but we don’t want to leave you loyal listeners without your weekly dose of health and fitness information. Which is why we reached into the ETT Wrap show vault for a throwback episode of the Addicted to Fitness podcast.

Shannon and I start off this classic episode discussing our weekly workouts, group training and ETT’s first team competition, the Mud Endeavor 5k. For those unfamiliar with the Mud Endeavor, its a great obstacle course race based out of West Central Florida. Having already ran this race, I highly recommend it and suggest anyone looking to challenge themselves, consider obstacle course racing. After all the mudrun talk, we get into the real “meat” of the episode.

The remainder of the podcast focuses on the wide variety of protein sources available to meateaters and non-meateaters. Shannon describes her experience as a vegan and lists off her go-to protein sources (legumes, nuts, seeds) along with what type of supplements she had to take in order to get all her essential nutrients (B12 & iron to name a few). We also read off a ton of our listeners favorite protein sources which include peanut butter, yogurt, eggs, cricket flour, red meat and many more. Reeling off our protein preferences leads to an interesting discussion about the importance of gut health, which we will definitely be talking more about in a future episode.

Addicted to Fitness Show Notes – From the Vault: Sleep Supplements & Biggest Loser

Guest post by Shannon.

As we draw closer to the holidays and the close of another year, it’s a great time for a flashback.

One of the great things about podcasting is that you have a store of regular discussions to look back on and relive. Thus, we bring you one of the Vault episode from the earlier rendition of the podcast known as the ETT Wrap Show.

In this podcast episode, Nick and I review his and the ETT race team’s performances in the Mud Endeavor 5k, how he avoided serious injury and how this race gives other obstacle course races, like Tough Mudder, a run for their money.

On this week's ETT Wrap Show, @shannonjp and I discuss ETT's experience at @mudendeavor, the @biggestlosernbc TV show and how quality of calories is more important than quantity of calories. I do have to warn you, there are a few instances of "potty mouth" on this episode. If you have a fitness and/or health question you'd like us to address on a future podcast OR tell us to quit it with the garage talk, leave a comment below. NOTE: The next ETT team competition is going to be the 2017 Gasparilla 5K on Feb. 25th in Tampa. Want to join the team? Register here and when you choose a team, look for Elemental Training Tampa.

We also get into my constant battle with getting back to a normal sleep routine after enjoying a total lack of sleep structure on vacation. Could simply getting out of an established routine be to blame or is work stress adding to the challenge? We reference a Primal Blueprint podcast and explain the cortisol effect and what supplements can help depleted adrenal glands.

Getting more into news, we chatted about a New York Times article describing former “The Biggest Loser” contestants’ post-show weight gain. A bit of friendly debate around whether a calorie deficit diet really is the best way to keep weight off, follows. It’s a common practice by celebrity trainers, but health experts don’t necessarily agree, opting for quality over quantity.

ETT Wrap Show Ep.17

This week’s episode features a recap of ETT’s first team competition, the Mud Endeavor 5k. I discuss the highlights, and a few lowlights, from the race including how I averted severely injuring myself. In addition to the recap, Shannon and I discuss sleep supplements, The Biggest Loser TV show and why the quality of your calories is more important than the quantity of your calories. Also, just so you’re not caught off guard, Shannon and I spout out a few risqué words in this episode. What can I say? We get emotional sometimes.

If you have a fitness and/or health question you’d like us to address on a future episode of the ETT Wrap Show, please leave a comment below or email us at elementaltampa@gmail.com.

ETT Wrap Show Ep.16

We’ve got Shannon & I’s wedding/honeymoon recap on this week’s ETT Wrap Show (last time you’ll hear wedding talk, promise). You will hear the newest Mr. & Mrs. Burch discuss biking around Key West, ETT’s achievement day and the upcoming mudrun. Also, I finally convince Shannon to try cricket flour protein bars. Her reaction might surprise you. If you like this week’s episode, please let us know AND share it with a friend. We love the support!

ETT Wrap Show Ep.12

SHE’S BACKKKK!!!!!! Shannon Palmer rejoins the podcast and helps me provide another thought provoking ETT Wrap Show. Shannon describes her experience as a vegan & vegetarian, while I admit to having no dietary restrictions when it comes protein. We also discuss ETT’s upcoming Mud Endeavor competition, ETT Group TrainingExo cricket flour and listeners’ protein preferences. ETT would like to thank Train. Fight. Win. owner & friend of the show L.A. Jennings, for her critique of the podcast. We appreciate her feedback, just like we appreciate YOUR feedback, so keep it coming!
