Addicted To Fitness Show Notes – From the Vault: Jiu Jitsu Training & Nutritional Benefits of Grassfed Beef

Even though Shannon and I are busy preparing for the arrival of our first little one, we still wanted to give you all your weekly dose of health & fitness info. Which is why we reached back into the ETT wrap show vault to pull out a throwback episode for this week’s Addicted to Fitness podcast.

As you’ll hear, this old school episode features the first cohost, Tyler Knox. That name may sound familiar to you all because he returned to the ATF podcast recently to discuss how being a new dad affects your fitness, which you can listen to by clicking here. Can you see the connection?

Tyler and I kick off this throwback episode discussing my recent jiu jitsu training. Before I took ETT full-time I was heavy into jiu jitsu and even got to take a seminar from the recently crowned 194 lb Abu Dubai Combat Club (ADCC) champion (link). If you have NO idea what ADCC is, just think of it as the olympics of jiu jitsu. With that said, Gordon Ryan is a beast and I was fortunate enough to receive his tutelage. Our jiu jitsu convo led to us discussing the shocking results of UFC 196.

Most fight fans may remember UFC 196 because it was the first and only time that Conor McGregor lost in the octagon. Conor was submitted by Nate Diaz by rear naked choke and the woman who dethroned Rhonda Rousey, Holly Holm, was defeated by Miesha Tate with the same move. It was an excellent advertisement for the power of jiu jitsu.

After our UFC recap, Tyler and I discuss the nutritional benefits of grass-fed beef. Shannon and I have talked about grass-fed labeling on a past ATF podcast (link), but this was the first time I ever discussed its nutritional superiority. According to the Primal Blueprint podcast, which is essentially a narration of blog posts from Mark Sisson’s website (link), grass-fed beef has an optimal omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acid ratio. It also contains higher amounts of specific vitamins and minerals, not to mention its animal welfare implications. Click here to read more about its nutrional benefits in a recent What’s on the Menu blog I wrote.

Even though grass-fed protein may take more raw resources to produce, it allows us to be more connected to our food supply. It can also help us rejuvenate the small farm industry that once thrived in this country. Another industry that we mention in this throwback episode that could help reduce our reliance on livestock protein is insect production. We allude to a cricket protein bar taste test, which we were able to accomplish in a future, or is it past episode? Either way, click here to listen.

I love looking back on these throwback episodes, not only to see how we have progressed as podcast, but also to see how the topics we’ve discussed have evolved. I hope you all enjoy these time capsule episodes as much as I do. If you do, we’d really appreciate it if you gave us a rating and review in iTunes (link) or on our new Addicted to Fitness Facebook page (link).

We’ve got a lot of great podcasts lined up for you all, including a possible delivery room episode. You’ll definitely want to subscribe to the podcast if you haven’t done so already, and please rate, review and share Addicted to Fitness with anyone and everyone. Thanks again for all the support and stay healthy this week peeps!

Addicted to Fitness Show Notes – 2016 Health & Fitness Accomplishments

I’m taking the show notes back this week as Shannon recovers after a stellar Christmas Day performance at our place. The woman is a hell of a host let me tell you. You all hear how passionate she is about exercise each week on the podcast so I’m sure you can imagine her engineering an all day Christmas extravaganza. With one holiday in the books, and New Years well in sight, Shannon and I thought it be appropriate to look back at our 2016 health and fitness achievements on this week’s episode of Addicted to Fitness.

Listing our achievements for 2016 made us grow nostalgic of all we were able to accomplish in the past year. We reminisced about the first Elemental Training Tampa (ETT) mudrun, coaching Carmin at Mike Calta’s Punchout 2, Shannon purchasing and loving her Peloton cycle, my tumultuous year of jiu-jitsu and Shannon’s dedication to a healthier way of eating (she’s already lost of 10 lbs!). Another achievement Shannon and I discuss is ETT’s first Facebook Live workout, which is happening December 26th at 11am EST. All you have to do is go to ETT’s Facebook page and you can take part in a intense HIIT workout that will help you work off some of those delicious Christmas calories.

This podcast itself is most definitely an accomplishment for us in 2016. Producing a weekly health and fitness podcast was a goal I set before this year started and I’m proud to say we were able to accomplish it. We’d love hear what goals you accomplished this year. Please feel free to share them with us in the comment section, on our various social channels or you can email them to us at elementaltampa@gmail.com. Your feedback and support has helped us grow into a 5 star rated podcast and we are extremely grateful. Keep rating, reviewing and sharing the podcast and let’s stay healthy as we transition into another year.

From the Vault: Exo Cricket Flour Protein Bar taste test

We reach way back in the ETT Wrap Show vault for this episode. This week’s Addicted to Fitness podcast features my former cohost Tyler and a taste test of a protein bar made from a tasty little critter. Before we get into the taste test, Tyler and I discuss my experience learning jiujitsu from current UFC fighter Joe Lauzon. This eventually leads to us talking about two of the biggest names in MMA at the time, and now strangely enough, Conor McGregor and Jon Jones. I inform Tyler about Jones’ impending suspension and why I think there is “no way” McGregor could beat Nate Diaz in a rematch. Boy was I wrong. After all the UFC talk, Tyler and I jump into the protein bar taste test.

Exo protein bars, according to their website, are “soy, dairy, grain and gluten-free. Paleo and environmentally friendly protein bars.” Most protein bars cannot makes these claims due to their ingredients, but the main ingredient in Exo bars is unlike any other protein bar. These bars are made with cricket flour. Yep, you read that right, this is a cricket bar. Most of the world already uses insects as a go to food source, but we still consider them somewhat taboo here in the United States. Except for crabs & lobsters which are essentially sea insects. Anyways, crickets produce 100x less greenhouse gases than cows and require a tremendous amount less water to produce than other protein sources like pigs and chickens (source). Tyler and I munch on two of these bad boys and to our surprise, love how they taste. High in fat and protein, these bars will keep you satiated a lot longer than any granola/trail mix bar. They also contain a significant portion of your recommended daily allowance of calcium and iron. The dates and honey used in the bars give them a relatively high sugar content, but I imagine the glycemic load is lowered due to the fiber and fat. I’d highly recommend everyone head over to the Exo protein bars website and grab a sampler pack. You won’t be disappointed, I promise.

Let us know about the newest “health” food craze that you’d like us to try on the podcast. I  already have a couple in mind *cough* cockroach milk *cough* but we always love hearing your suggestions. In addition to leaving us suggestions on future taste tests,  please help us out by leaving us a rating and review on iTunes. Our downloads continue to climb each week which means your ratings, reviews and shares are helping us grow our audience. Thanks for the support and stay healthy this week peeps!

What Memorial Day Means To Us

This week’s episode contains both fun and serious facts about the Memorial Day holiday. Also, Shannon and I dive into how to eat healthy at summer pool parties/cookouts, next week’s interview with a well known fitness & health professional and the iTunes debut of the ETT Wrap Show. If you like the podcast, please share it with a friend. Help us get the good word of health & fitness out to as many people as possible. Preesh!

Even though the Memorial Day holiday will have past when this episode debuts, we at ETT want to thank the men and women of the armed forces, especially those that have given their lives, to ensure our freedom. Thank you.

ETT Wrap Show Ep.14

Tyler returns for this tasty episode of the ETT Wrap Show. We kick off this week’s show chatting about the most recent ETT group training session, the latest UFC news involving Conor McGregor and Shannon & I’s upcoming wedding. The rest of the episode is dedicated to a taste test and review of Exo cricket flour protein bars. Listen to us do out best version of Fear Factor and let us know if you’d be up for making insects a part of your diet. Also, do us a favor and share this with a friend. You know we’ll appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

ETT Wrap Show Ep.2

This week’s episode of the ETT Wrap Show dives into my most profound learning experience as a personal trainer to date. We also discuss Mark Sisson’s recent appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience and if I would recommend jiu-jitsu to any ETT personal training clients. We are dedicated to putting this podcast out on a consistent basis, but we need your feedback to help us provide the best product possible. Love it or hate it, we want to hear from you! Thanks in advance and don’t forget to make your fitness a priority.
